TALLAHASSEE — The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Board of Trustees has unanimously agreed to appoint Larry Robinson interim president until a permanent head of the troubled school is named.
Robinson’s interim appointment must be confirmed by the Florida Board of Governors which overseas the State University System, of which FAMU is a member..
“Considering all that has happened, we continue to do remarkable things at FAMU,” Robinson, the university’s provost, said in a university statement.
The university has been in turmoil since the hazing death of a drum major in 2011.
The board will now conduct a search for a permanent president succeeding James Ammons who recently quit under pressure.
Trustees Karl White of Boston and Dr. Spurgeon McWilliams of Tallahassee will co-chair the search committee.
Other board members on the committee include Narayan Persaud, president of the Faculty Senate; Marissa West, president of the FAMU Student Government Association; Torey Alston of Fort Lauderdale; Belinda Reid-Shannon of Raleigh; and Marjorie Turnbull of Tallahassee. Tommy Mitchell, president of the National Alumni Association, and the Elizabeth Webster, a member of the Florida Board of Governors, are the other members, along with board chairman Solomon Badger, who will serve as an ex-officio member.
Badger also appointed an advisory panel to the search committee, comprising Trustee C. William Jennings of Orlando; Board of Governors Chairman Dean Colson; and former FAMU President Frederick S. Humphries.
