PORT-OF-SPAIN — Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll had been leading a trade mission of 27 Florida companies to the twin-island nation, the state's largest trading partner in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Carroll was born in Trinidad and immigrated to the United States as a young child and became a naturalized citizen. Her arrival came shortly before the country celebrated its 50th anniversary of independence from Great Britain on Aug. 1. She was scheduled to give speeches on American democracy and the role states have in U.S. elections. An estimated 40,000 people from Trinidad and Tobago live in Florida, according to U.S. Census estimates. Last year, about 75,000 people from the nation visited Florida.
