MIAMI — DiStephano Accilien, a junior at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep and Lorie Tranchant, an 8th-grade student at ACND Prep’s Brother Rice Honors Academy have been honored with the 2012 Bill Carr Youth Recognition Program Award.
This award recognizes exemplary students of any grade level (K-12) that have accomplished outstanding deeds and who reside in North Miami or attend a school within the North Miami city limits. The award is made in honor of the late North Miami Councilman Bill Carr.
North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre, Vice Mayor Jean Marcellus and Council Members Michael Blynn, Scott Gavin and Marie Erlande Steril presented awards to the students during last week’s North
Miami City Hall Council meeting.
Accilien is an honors student, maintaining a 4.5 Grade Point Average. He is the captain of the Curley Knights’ Soccer Team and an active member in La Sainte Famille Youth Group at St. James Church. He came from Haiti to the United States in 2007.
Although learning English was a challenge, he now excels in all academic areas, enjoys science, and plans to become a pediatrician. He is looking forward to the possibility of working this summer as a North Miami intern through the program offered by the City of North Miami Youth Opportunity Board.
Tranchant is a scholar in the eighth grade at the Brother Rice Honors Academy (ACND Prep’s middle school). She was elected by her peers as the “Mediator” for the Academy, assisting students to resolve any difficulties arising between classmates. She plays the trumpet in the ACND band, and enjoys singing at the Church of the Full Gospel Assembly. She plans to enter freshman year of high school this fall at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame.
“I am enthusiastic about the growing number of students from North Miami that are choosing to attend the Brother Rice Honors Academy and Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School,” said Brother James DePiro, ACND vice principal.
