MIAMI — With the Atlantic Hurricane Season having started June 1 and running until November 30, the Miami-Dade Emergency Operation Center (EOC) played host to this year’s annual State Division of Emergency Management hurricane simulation exercise.
The EOC is located at Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Headquarters. The functional exercise consisted of more than 60 participants including Miami-Dade Emergency Management, various organizations involved in emergency response and support roles, evaluators and observers.
The purpose of the exercise was to reinforce effectiveness of the EOC through the evaluation of EOC personnel, protocols, and equipment capabilities.
The attendees’ exercise objectives included assessment of hurricane formation, response to a hurricane event and support of county response to a hurricane.
This annual drill provides realistic exercise experience for the EOC and all of its multi-agency partners.
“Miami-Dade County has not been hit with a storm in more than seven years” said Miami-Dade Emergency Management Director Curt Sommerhoff. “We are doing our part by making sure we are prepared and it is important for residents to do theirs by making sure they are prepared throughout every hurricane season.”
