MIAMI — Armed with the knowledge of Science, Math and History, fifth-grade students from Golden Glades Elementary School and North Dade Center for Modern Languages battled for the number one spot in Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan’s 2012 Brain Blast on May 18.
Now in its fourth year, the Brain Blast is a meeting of the minds that pits one elementary school against another. This year’s winner was North Dade Center for Modern Languages.
“The Brain Blast is an opportunity to showcase the educational talent of our children,” said Commissioner Jordan. “While I hold athletic competitions for students, it is equally as important to highlight their skills off of the gridiron and away from the basketball court.”
Each team was asked to respond to questions regarding the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution, chemical symbols and Black History. Each school was awarded $500 for their participation and students received a trophy.
“This is the second year that North Dade Center for Modern Languages has walked away victoriously,” said Commissioner Jordan. “They are fierce competitors and I look forward to next year’s academic showdown.”
The winning team consisted of Miranda del Sol, Robert Desrosiers, Regine Donatien, Krystal Leyva, Suzanne Melbourne and Angela Munoz. Miami-Dade School Board member Wilbert T. Holloway was on hand to congratulate students for participating in the event. Kinad Inc., which coordinated the educational duel, has overseen the production of the Brain Blast since its inception.
