FORT LAUDERDALE _ Broward County Commissioners on Tuesday selected Bertha Henry as Broward County administrator. If commissioners approve her contract on Oct. 7, she will become the first black woman to hold that position.
Henry, who earns $244,000 a year as the interim administrator, has held the interim post since the abrupt resignation of Pam Brangaccio in October 2007.
Her selection was approved by an 8-1 vote, with County Commissioner John Rodstrom dissenting. Rodstrom said he would support Henry’s selection if she shows that she will treat all county commissioners the same way, and that she will remove politics from her approach to the job.
Henry is expected to be offered as much as $270,000 to take the job permanently.
Henry’s selection follows a $23,000 nationwide search for a new county chief executive.
She was one of three finalists whom county commissioners interviewed earlier this month. The others were chief assistant Miami-Dade County Manager Susy Torriente and Lee Trotter, the deputy administrator in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
