HELENA, Mont. (AP) _ Two Democrats are calling for a congressional hearing to examine a Montana judge's conduct in forwarding an email that included a racist joke involving bestiality and President Barack Obama's mother.
Reps. John Conyers of Michigan and Steve Cohen of Tennessee sent House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith a letter Tuesday saying the committee has a duty to investigate the potential consequences of Judge Richard Cebull's email.
They say the email may undermine the public's view of the integrity of the entire federal judiciary.
At least three complaints have been filed with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals against Cebull, including one by Cebull himself.
The appellate court will conduct a judicial misconduct investigation. But Conyers and Cohen say a legislative inquiry is necessary regardless of the results of that investigation.
