TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ The sponsor of a bill that would have allowed expensive and largely unregulated out-of-state companies to take over homeowners' insurance policies from Florida's state-backed insurer says the measure is “dead'' for this year.
House members had disagreed Tuesday over requiring insurers to get the signature of every consumer who is switched from Citizens Property Insurance Corp.
Democrats joined Republicans to vote for a Senate amendment on the signature requirement. The bill's vote in the House then was indefinitely postponed.
Rep. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, later said that the measure (HB 245) was dead for this legislative session.
Lawmakers have tried for years to shrink Citizens in hopes of reducing the insurer's market exposure and the commensurate risk to millions of Floridians. Citizens is Florida's largest insurer of homes and businesses.
