TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ A bill that would modify state school districts' “zero tolerance'' policies is ready for a vote in the Florida Senate.
Sen. Stephen Wise on Monday said his measure (SB 1886) would require “petty acts of misconduct'' to be handled in-house by schools and not by law enforcement.
The Jacksonville Republican's bill also would let misdemeanor incidents that didn't threaten school safety to be handled by school disciplinarians if a victim consents.
A study last year showed most Florida school districts still had harsh zero tolerance policies despite a 2009 law urging them to be more tolerant.
The bill next comes before the Senate for a final vote.
