DELRAY BEACH — The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is hosting an exhibition, Scenes from Africa: Photographs by Samuel Spear Jr., showcasing nearly two dozen colorful photographs shot by Spear during trips to West Africa, including Senegal, Ghana and Timbuktu. The photos provide an intimate portrait of the diversity of culture and humanity, as seen through the lens of an avid traveler.
“I am drawn to people and faces in natural settings, not the upper class but regular people in their normal state,” Spear says. “There is real beauty in their spirit. Africa is so much more than what people think it is or how it has been portrayed and that is what I try to capture in my photographs.”
Scenes from Africa: Photographs by Samuel Spear Jr. will remain on display through February, Black History Month at the Spady Museum, 170 N.W. Fifth Ave., Delray Beach.
Spady will also host an opening exhibit reception for the showing from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 2.
The museum will at the same time host an Open House for the Munnings Cottage. Visitors will have a chance to tour the newly opened facility, also known as the Kids’ Cultural Clubhouse, just adjacent to Spady’s location.
The Munnings Cottage has been renovated to be a hub of intergenerational programs and cultural creativity for the museum’s youngest members.
“This is an exciting time for the Spady Museum, as we begin our new exhibit schedule and open our newest community resource,” said Spady Museum Administrator Charlene Jones. “We invite art and culture lovers to come see what’s new at the museum and enjoy our upcoming programs.”
Upcoming Spady programs include:
* “Ride and Remember” Trolley Tour, sponsored by Florida Power & Light and The Colony Hotel, 10 a.m.-noon, Thursday, Feb. 9.
The trolley takes riders on a tour of the city’s five historic districts. Visitors will also be able to tour the Spady Museum and other locations and disembark at historic sites for a closer look at the history of Delray Beach.
The pickup location is Spady and the cost is $15 per person.
* “Connecting Community and Culture” Lecture Series, sponsored by the Florida Department of State Historic Preservation Grants in Aid program, 5:30 p.m., March 1, 15, 29 and April 12.
The four-part lecture series, which is free to the public, is designed to highlight the rich, cultural heritage of Americans in South Florida.
