LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The Athletics Federation of Nigeria announced that retired sprinter Sunday Bada, a former Olympic medalist and indoor world champion, has died. He was 42.

Federation President Solomon Ogba told The Associated Press that Bada died Dec. 12 in Lagos. He said the circumstances of his death were still unclear.

Ogba said Bada, who was working as the technical director of the federation, had been “very healthy” as far as he knew and had recently attended a Nigeria Olympians Association meeting.

The IAAF said on its website that it was “shocked and saddened” by Bada’s death.

Bada was a member of the Nigerian team that took silver in the 4×400-meter relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also took gold in the 400 at the

1997 World Indoor Champion-ships in Paris.
