Miami – Miami-Dade County announces the return of Black Business Month, a vibrant and impactful celebration highlighting the substantial contributions of Black entrepreneurs and business leaders in our community. This monthlong series of events began with a pre-kickoff gathering at the Stephen P. Clark Building, on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

This economic development initiative underscores the County’s unwavering commitment to fostering prosperity and empowerment.

“As goes Black business in Miami, so goes business in Miami-Dade County,” said Bill Diggs, Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT) executive director and chairman of Miami-Dade County’s Black Business Month Steering Committee. In 2024, we aim to position ourselves at the epicenter of business growth in this top-ranked county. Miami-Dade County has repeatedly proven its resiliency, and now we must look forward to being the loudest voice for diversity and inclusion in the country. This county is a melting pot of idealism and multicultural progress. This August, we are celebrating the significant contributions of Black businesses.

Black Business Month is a dedicated initiative celebrating the enduring legacy of Black business owners who have shown remarkable resilience, innovation, and excellence across diverse industries despite historical challenges. Through a series of engaging events, workshops, and networking opportunities, Miami-Dade County aims to highlight the significance of Black-owned businesses, acknowledge their vital contribution to the local economy, and support their ongoing growth and success. This celebration was championed by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee.

The introduction of Black Business Month in Miami-Dade County represents a proactive initiative. This demonstrates the dedication of our local government and community allies to offer essential assistance and acknowledgment to these determined entrepreneurs,” said County Commissioner McGhee. “The primary objective is to cultivate a supportive atmosphere for Black-owned businesses, aiding them in surmounting obstacles and advancing their achievements. This designated month will catalyze enhanced backing, promote economic development, and strengthen our local economy.”

In the spirit of community engagement, the members of the Board of County Commissioners play a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives that drive the progress and prosperity of our black entrepreneurs.

The Board of County Commissioners brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and dedication to their roles, working collaboratively to address the diverse needs of our community and ensure sustainable development and equity for all residents.

As we embrace Black Business Month this August, we celebrate the extraordinary contributions of Blackowned businesses in Miami-Dade County. These enterprises are the heartbeat of our local economy, driving innovation, creating opportunities, and enriching our community’s vibrant landscape. Through local initiatives such as the Mom and Pop Small Business Grant program, I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to fostering economic growth and inclusivity. Let us stand together, honoring and uplifting our Black entrepreneurs who shape our community with their resilience and vision,” said Chairman.

“Celebrating Black Business Month in Miami-Dade County empowers all Black people of the African diaspora. As a Haitian woman of African descent, I am grateful for Miami-Dade County’s commitment to providing the support and recognition Blackowned businesses have earned and deserve,” said County Commissioner Bastien. “Through economic empowerment, Black-owned businesses will soar into success and influence. And as a result, our communities will become stronger for future generations.”

“Black Business Month recognizes the vital role that Black-owned businesses play in our county’s diverse economic and cultural landscape. It fosters economic growth and highlights Black entrepreneurs’ unique contributions, all while promoting a more inclusive and equitable community,” said County Commissioner Hardemon.

A collaborative effort spearheaded by the Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust, Miami-Dade County Black Business Month Steering Committee, Miami-Dade Black Affairs Advisory Board, and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau has produced a diverse and dynamic lineup of events for the entire month.

“Entrepreneurship, especially small business, is at the heart of helping fuel the hospitality and visitor ecosystem,” said Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau President and CEO David Whitaker. “Black Business Month allows industry partners, local residents and visitors alike to create and build new relationships.”

Multiple organizations, including the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, City of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, Jackon Health System, Commissioner Hardemon, Commissioner CohenHiggins and the Black Professionals Network have all contributed to this month’s diverse offerings.

“As we embrace Black Business Month, we seize the opportunity to empower and uplift these enterprises, recognizing their pivotal role in driving economic growth and fostering inclusive prosperity,” remarked G. Eric Knowles, president of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce.

The primary aim of Black Business Month is to showcase success stories, foster economic empowerment, and raise awareness about essential County resources within the community.
