broward-health-mammogram-exhibit_web.jpgBroward Health will host the third annual MAMMO-PALOOZA In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event is being coordinated throughout Broward Health’s hospitals and health centers and will offer mammograms and an AmeriBreasts exhibit and other events to increase breast health awareness.

MAMMO-PALOOZA focuses on the importance of getting timely mammograms and has set a goal of at least 1,300 screenings for the week of Oct. 10. Mammograms will be offered at an affordable price and will be covered through health insurance. Those who have a mammogram will receive a special gift.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 230,480 women and 2,140 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. Early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.

“As a surgical oncologist, I cannot stress enough the importance of being screened for breast cancer.  Mammograms are imperative to catching the disease early,” said Dr. Nicholas Tranakas, Broward General Medical Center’s medical director for cancer services.

“To have an event like MAMMO-PALOOZA, which brings awareness to breast cancer and provides an opportunity for women to be tested, is very special for our community,” he said.

Frank Nask, president/CEO of Broward Health, added, “Early detection and awareness is the cornerstone of MAMMO-PALOOZA and the Broward Health mission. This screening program can prevent more serious illness and even save the lives of our community members.”
