HOLLYWOOD — Prosecutors with the Broward State Attorney’s Office have cleared former Hollywood city manager Cameron Benson in a probe centering on the purchase of a generator.
Benson was accused in anonymous letters of ordering Hollywood Police Officer Dan Dunn to purchase a generator on a city-issued credit card and deliver it to Benson’s father at his Lauderhill home.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the prosecutors conducted an investigation into the allegation and concluded that it was false.
In a sworn statement, Dunn denied the accusation and told investigators he offered to buy the generator for Benson’s father in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma in 2005 because Benson was busy managing the city’s cleanup effort. Dunn said he was reimbursed upon delivering the generator.
During the investigation, Benson produced a canceled check made out to Dunn as proof.
“Mr. [Cameron] Benson was able to provide a canceled check from Hayworth Benson dated 10/26/05 for $1,415 for Officer Dunn’s purchases on his credit card for him,” wrote Assistant State Attorney Jeannette Camacho in her memo closing the case.
“There is no evidence to support that Mr. Benson committed any crime in reference to the generators.”
Other anonymous allegations were made against Benson but state attorney spokesman Ron Ishoy said there are no other open investigations involving him.
