DELRAY BEACH — The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum has announced a series of events for its annual fall activities that will include a new food and wine fundraising event, a new volunteer group and some returning favorites.
The Spady Museum, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, is a non-profit organization dedicated to discovering, collecting and sharing the African-American history and heritage of Florida and is the only museum of its kind in Palm Beach County.
The schedule follows:
• Wednesday, Sept. 14, 5 p.m.: Meeting of Spady Cares, a group of museum supporters who meet regularly to lend a helping hand to any person, group or organization needing support in the community. The meeting will take place at the Spady Museum, 170 NW Fifth Ave., Delray Beach.

• Friday, Sept. 23: Playwrights and Play Readings. Donalda Alberta McCarthy will direct an evening of interactive play-reading at the museum, featuring the play Three Generations

• Saturday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m.-noon: The “Ride and Remember” Trolley Tour, sponsored by Florida Power & Light and The Colony Hotel, will take
riders on a tour of Delray Beach’s historic areas. Riders will tour the Spady Museum and Old School Square and a third location to be announced. They will also disembark at select historic sites for a closer look at the history of the city.
The tour will continue the second Saturday of each month. The pick-up location is the Delray Beach Parking Garage at Northeast First Street and Northeast First Avenue. The cost is $15 per person.
• Friday, Oct. 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m.: A new feature, “Soulful Tastings: An Evening of Southern Foods and South African Wines,” is being sponsored by Shuler’s Memorial Chapel and Patio Delray. The event will offer a gourmet take on soul food by Chef Scott Thomas of Patio Delray and samplings of South African wines, courtesy of Republic National Distributing. Food tastings will include appetizers of boneless beef ribs with Carolina barbecue sauce and hush puppies, chicken ’n’ biscuits and sweet potato doughnut holes.
Proceeds will benefit the public programs of the Spady Museum.
The event will take place at Patio Delray, 800 Palm Trail, Delray Beach (www.patiodelray.com). The cost is $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at www.spadymuseum.org.
• Saturday, Nov. 5: Spady Day Festival. Anyone who loves to party and the ways of traditional Southern Florida are invited to join the fun along historic Northwest Fifth Avenue for the annual Living Heritage Festival. The event features the Tradition Bearers of Renaissance Park of Marianna, a children’s play area, live musical entertainment, a vintage farm exhibition and storytelling. There is no cost to attend. Besides the special activities, the Spady Museum hosts rotating exhibits featuring contributions
of African-American, Haitian-American and Caribbean-American cultures to the artistic landscape of Florida and the U.S.
The museum also organizes community events, special fundraisers, public education programs and children’s activities. It is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays and by appointment on Saturdays. The admission cost is $5 for the general public; it is free to museum members.
