Mikeron “Mike” Calvin, a 30-year veteran with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, died at age 62.Calvin, who was recovering from a knee injury, died Sept. 3. Calvin was born on an Army base in Boca Raton, Florida to Elmore and Johnnie Mae Jones Calvin. His father preceded him in death in 1978.
He graduated from Blanche Ely High School in 1968 and entered the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam and Korea as a military policeman and was honorably discharged.
He married the former Cherrie Hill and they had four children, one of whom, Preciousvy Calvin-Jones, preceded him in death in May.
He joined the BSO in 1981, rose to the rank of
sergeant and was a member of the SWAT team.
Calvin was baptized and was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, led by Bishop Kenneth “Omega” Shelton. He had a vision of helping the Youth Department at church.
His survivors include his children, Nikita Calvin-Raysor of Fort Lauderdale, Tecovia of Coconut Creek, Julian Calvin of Pompano Beach, step-daughter Dawn of Fort Lauderdale and Shanika Mosley of Fort Lauderdale, mother, Johnnie Mae Calvin, brothers Robert and Woodrow of Detroit and Oliver of Fort Lauderdale; and sisters, Erma of Deerfield Beach and Rosemary (Rufus) Carswell of Pompano Beach.
