rolfe_larson.jpgBroward Cultural Division, ArtServe Inc., Nova Southeastern University and The Grantsmanship Center will host a workshop on “Social Enterprise for Nonprofits” from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 and Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Room 2053 of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, Nova Southeastern University, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr., Blvd., Davie.

 

A statement from the organizers said the workshop will benefit cultural nonprofit organization board members and development staff who must raise funds, as well as artists and creative entrepreneurs and members and the cultural community

It will show participants how to champion the venture development process within their organizations, using a curriculum designed to meet the special challenges facing 21st century nonprofits and explain how market-based activities can drive an organization to improve the services it already delivers, making it more efficient and more competitive.

Topics include how to approach social enterprise in a way that supports your organization’s mission; how to evaluate a social enterprise opportunity; and how to develop, grow and diversify an earned income program.

Attendees will also help develop of a business plan, including market research, pricing strategies, operational plans and financial analysis.

Rolfe Larson, one of the workshop instructors, has more than 20 years of experience managing and advising organizations in the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. He has served as an executive at Minnesota Public Radio and on the board of the Social Enterprise Alliance. He is also a professor of marketing at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis and holds an MBA from Yale University. He is the author of Venture Forth!, a layman’s manual on nonprofits.

Michael Whitehead-Bust, another instructor, has been managing and consulting with for-profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as public charter schools for 15 years. He is an expert in financial analysis and regularly speaks to national audiences on social enterprise and related topics. He has founded several for-profit and nonprofit businesses. He holds an MBA in entrepreneurship and finance from Babson College.

Enrollment in the workshop is limited to 30 participants in order to allow maximum interaction with the instructors and with the other participants.

The Broward County Cultural Council is offering tuition assistance to Broward County cultural arts organizations, artists, and creative businesses that complete the two-day program. This scholarship availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.
