T’was the year before the midterms, when all through the house The big lie was still scurrying, like a ravenous, little mouse
The people had decided from far and near,
Who their president would be for the next 4 years.
Votes were hung up, ballots were triple counted,
But politicians told lies and the results were doubted. The courts were stuffed with frivolous lawsuits, As judges threw them out because they bore no fruit!
Crowds gathered at the nation’s capital, called there by a losing president, Mumbling and babbling, huffing and puffing, trying to blow democracy down.
He could not find any precedent, so he left with a frown. They attacked the Congress leading an insurrection, Trying their best to stop certifying the presidential election. Windows were broken, doors were knocked down,
Hoping to make lawmakers, turn their votes around.
Hallways were soiled, offices were sacked,
They attempted to reinstate an expresident, who wanted to come back. People were killed, and others were maimed,
They lost their lives, while protecting our democracy.
They understood America is not an autocracy.
Many ask will America ever be the same?
Will it be freedom and justice, or will mobsters change the game? Nations of the world ask what is the matter, As our country grows weak from poisonous political chatter? Good tidings of economic aid and abundant social joy
Is made to look bad like its meant to destroy.
Back in the House the needs of people cannot be adopted,
Too many who work there have been politically co-opted. Forcing progress into a land of never never, Rather than helping the people to Build Back Better.
They hide behind claims of respecting a filibuster,
Which stops all movement thus forming a cluster. Blocking any progress which the people can muster, Crying bi-partisanship is essential for any improvements, Is a sham, a shadow, preventing critical development. Voter suppression bills are made law all over the country, Threatening the vote in 2022,
While scheming to do much more in 2024!
Saying if we can’t win the elections legally, the right way
Let’s cheat and change the rules and do it our own way.
If they don’t like a district they will re-draw the lines,
Believing that gerrymandering will guarantee them victory each and every time
Republicans hold firm, for this is their strategy,
Aided by a couple of Democrats who claim filibuster is necessity. But a necessity for who, a requirement for what?
It’s not a written law, it’s not in the Constitution.
It was born at a time of enslavement and abolition,
Used only when politicians refuse to change the current condition. So, it stops a vote here,
Its effect can eliminate voting boxes there,
It may cause election results to be reversed everywhere!
It hurts people of color, youth, seniors, and the disabled It really has only one mission, To make certain our elections are put out of commission.
Our president must lead, he must not falter,
Don’t allow gains made sacrificed on tyranny’s altar
This is the ghost of elections to come, It should really frighten the complacency out of everyone.
If we don’t act now our democracy may be done.
So, call your senators, Send messages to the House, Organize your community, let’s coordinate our activity,
Pass the For the People Voting Rights Act for our national security. We need the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
The life of our nation is at stake and that’s a fact!
Election protection this is the season, And that America is a mighty good reason!
Let’s end the filibuster now, Let’s tear down the wall, So, our freedom will flourish, And our democracy won’t fall!
