gavel_2.jpgTALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ A panel set up by the Florida Supreme Court to suggest ways to prevent wrongful convictions has recommended line-up standards for police.

The recommendations in an interim report from the Florida Innocence Commission on Tuesday, though, are nothing more than that.

Bills were introduced during the recently ended legislative session that would have required law enforcement agencies to comply with similar standards, but they failed to pass.

The commission has found the biggest factor in wrongful convictions is erroneous witness identification of suspects.

The recommendations would tighten standards for live and photo line-ups in an effort to reduce those errors.

That includes having someone independent of an investigation administering the line-up and documenting the witness' exact comments.

The panel also recommended periodic training updates.
