ROYAL PALM BEACH — The School District of Palm Beach County will host the 17th annual African and African American Studies Summer Institute later this month. The theme is “Education and the African American Experience: Past, Present, and Future.” The Office of African and African American Studies, currently under the Department of Multicultural Education, sponsors the week-long institute which focuses on infusing African American Studies into the curriculum across all subjects in grades K-12.
They will undertake an in-depth study of African and African-American history and noted scholars will discuss state-of-the-art African and African-American history instructional techniques.
The district said in a statement that the institute will also serve to build a collaborative base involving the home, the school and the community.
The institute will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 13 to 17 at Royal Palm Beach Community High School, 10600 Okeechobee Blvd., Royal Palm Beach. The schedule is:
• Monday, June 13: Chika Akua, “Education for Transformation: Infusing African and African American Content into the Curriculum”
• Tuesday, June 14: Kenneth Brown, “Understanding Race, Gender, and Ethnicity: Skills to Become a More Effective Educator”
• Wednesday, June 15: Concurrent sessions, featuring Fartun Mohamud, “Expanding Perspectives: Culturally Responsive Teaching in Diverse Classrooms;” John Hay, “Dynamics of the African American Male;” Akbar Watson, “Infusing Afrocentric Literature to Reduce the Dropout Rates of African American Males;”Steve White, “Helping Black Children Reach Their Full Potential”
• Thursday, June 16: Akbar Watson, et al., “Afrocentricity through Media”
• Friday, June 17: Educational field experience to Ft. Mosè in St. Augustine and Kingsley Plantation in Jacksonville.
