graduation_web.jpgWEST PALM BEACH —  The Scholastic Achievement Foundation of Palm Beach County recently awarded college scholarships to six high school seniors from West Palm Beach.


One of the students, Christopher Nickell, of  John I. Leonard High School, received a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Florida Atlantic University.

The other five are Natalie Chavez, also of John I. Leonard, and Gerline Casseus, Janell Cleare, Ivette Lopez and Argi Ann Mateo of  Palm Beach Lakes High.

They were among  a total of 28 students who received $1,000 scholarships each during the foundation’s 33rd annual Student Recognition Dinner held at The Breakers in Palm Beach.

Besides the foundation, businesses and individuals also helped sponsor scholarships for the six students. They include  United Healthcare, Linda Orr, Florida Atlantic University, the North County Section of the Palm Beach County Bar Association and BankAtlantic.  

Additional sponsors of the recognition event and of other scholarships included Bank of America, Maxine Battjes, Balfour, Joe Griffin & Associates, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heckrodt, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Jensen, Mr. Neil and Mrs. Nellie J. McMillan, Mr. and Mrs. George Elmore.

Also, Janet Perry; Harriet Secrest; Vincent Burkhardt; Madeleine Ripley; Mr. and Mrs. Ned. M. Shandloff; Quail Ridge Country Club, Rotary Club of Delray Beach, The Tom and Patty Doar Foundation and the Robert J. Bauer Family Foundation.

Meanwhile, more than 37,000 volunteers and 1,120 business partners donated their time and resources in public schools throughout Palm Beach County, helping students academically by supporting teachers and schools.

The Palm Beach County school district’s Office of Community Involvement held a recognition event honoring outstanding volunteers and business partners on May 4.

Some 600 volunteers, business partners and community members were invited to  the recognition breakfast being held at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. 

Sponsors for the event were Clear Channel Radio, Keiser University, Office Depot, Schoolhouse Consulting Group Inc. and Wachovia.
