Retired Congresswoman Carrie Meek took time from her 85th birthday celebration to preside over the opening Friday of a new health clinic named for her in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood.
Those joining Meek were Congresswoman Corinne Brown, D-Jacksonville, Miami-Dade County Commission Vice-Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime for the cutting of the ribbon for the Carrie Meek Clinic located at Villa Patricia Towers, 7801 NE Second Ave.
Also present were Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado, North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre and Miami City Commissioner Richard Dunn.
Meek’s children, former Congressman Kendrick Meek and Lucia Davis-Raiford, director of the Miami-Dade Office of Fair Employment Practices, were also in attendance.
Borinquen Medical Centers officials present included Eva Pérez, chairwoman of the board; Robert Linder, CEO; Margaret Laforest, board secretary; and Paul Velez, chief administrative officer.
The opening of the center also served as a celebration of Meek's 85th birthday. Edmonson and Monestime presented her with a vase and a birthday scroll to mark the occasion on behalf of the County Commission.
“It is fitting that this new clinic will be able to help thousands of residents, just as its namesake has during her time in Congress and now through her [Carrie Meek] foundation,” Edmonson said. “Carrie Meek deserves this honor.”
