“UNPACKING THE POLITICS OF BLACK HAIR”: Scenes from the “Candid discussion on the acceptance of black hair and its diversity in style and beauty as an individual choice,” moderated by Calibe Thompson (in red), Island Origins Magazine publisher, Jan. 27 at Miami’s Betsy Hotel. The event debuted the 2019 Cultural Conversation series on “the politics that take place with having relaxed, braided, nappy, loc’d hair for black men and women,” the organizers said. Some of the topics the series will tackle include the connection between hair and identity, don’t touch my hair and black hair at work. The Cultural Conversation series is open to the public and is free of charge. RSVP is required to rsvp@thebetsyhotel.com.
