Broward Votes, the series of political forums aimed at heightening political awareness among central Broward residents, is in its second week.
This week’s open forum, to be moderated by South Florida Times reporter and political commentator Joy-Ann Reid and Cheryl Mizell of WEDR 99 JAMZ, will focus on the local political races. The forum aims to specifically reach out to residents of the 33311 ZIP code, which is considered the poorest area in Broward County. Mizell said there is a need to heighten political awareness among the residents of 33311. “Local politicians are the ones who can affect the change and create the policies that have the greatest impact on our everyday lives,” she said. “We must take the time to learn how our local government works and pay closer attention to what our local politicians are doing in office if we want to improve the quality of lives and the future of our children.” Broward Votes is a joint initiative hosted by The Urban League of Broward County along with the Urban League of Broward County’s Young Professionals Network, 100 Black Men of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Jamaican Diaspora of Southern United States, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) South Florida chapter, the T.J. Reddick Bar Association and the Caribbean Bar Association. The official website, www.browardvotes.com, will accompany the initiative throughout its duration in the month of July. The forum seeks to further the communication between local candidates and the public. The site offers recaps and video clips from each forum, and has a blog where community members can discuss candidates’ responses to questions that were posed at the forum by the attendees.
