DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – This year, Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday landed on the day designated to celebrate the Civil Rights icon’s contribution to society. On Jan. 15, more than 210 people sang, laughed and praised together as part of the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast celebration.
The museum welcomed county and city government heads, civic and church leaders, as well as representatives from education, art & culture and other nonprofit organizations to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.
Singers Carla P. Clark and Donna Singer inspired the audience with beautiful renditions of Negro spirituals, hymns, jazz and R&B. Words of inspiration were provided by Chanteria Hughes, an 11th grade student at Boca Raton Community High School; and James Green reminded everyone – through a humorous, childhood story – that each person has a responsibility to do the right thing.
A highlight of the morning was the presentation of the first Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy award to Tavarius Jackson and Jamael Stewart for their work developing local youth via sports and education through their organization, Prep & Sports, a nonprofit that provides practical academic support, tutoring and skill building, athletic mentorships, training and guidance. Prep & Sports has a 100 percent, on-time graduation rate and works with its students on academics, as well as athleticism, so they are well rounded, prepared individuals.
“They can always take sports away from you, but your education, they can never take that away,” said Stewart.
The breakfast concluded with comments from Mayor Cary Glickstein, who also read the city’s proclamation, naming January 15, 2018 as “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day” in Delray Beach.
2018 event sponsors include Iberia Bank, PNC Bank, the West Atlantic Redevelopment Coalition, City of Delray Beach, Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Sugar Cane League.
The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is the only museum of its kind in Palm Beach County. Located at 170 NW Fifth Avenue in Delray Beach, it is dedicated to showcasing the African-, Haitian- and Caribbean-American cultural contributions to the artistic landscape of Florida and the U.S. Hours: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday-Friday.
