TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ School officials say Gov. Rick Scott's proposal to cut school spending by at least $300, or 4.3 percent, for each student in Florida would mean layoffs and put music, art, athletics and other noncore programs on the chopping block.
They said Tuesday that teacher layoffs, though, would violate the Florida Constitution's class size limits.
Even some lawmakers who advocate state spending reductions were stunned by the depth of Scott's education cuts.
Scott on Monday proposed a school funding formula that would reduce per student spending by $703, or 10 percent.
He also said the cut can be reduced to $300 by making school employees pay 5 percent of their salaries into their pension plan and through a one-time infusion of federal cash.
