Versatile jazz artist Avery Sunshine will headline the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Celebration Committee’s September Groove Concert Series slated for 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in the Abdo New River Room of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
“Avery Sunshine will make you feel every note of her strong, yet jazzy smooth style,” said Wayne Alexander, committee chairman. “You don’t want to miss this up-and-coming artist in her only South Florida appearance.”
Sunshine is already well known in the music world and her self-titled album will soon be released.
With roots in gospel, the singer/songwriter/pianist incorporates soul, house, classical and hip hop with jazzy vocals and lyrics into a unique sound that she calls “jazzgosoul.”
She is heard on the soundtrack of The Fighting Temptations and served as choral director for the theatrical production of Dreamgirls during the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta.
She also performed at the Democratic National Convention and at inauguration events for President Barack Obama.
Funding for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee is provided in part by the Broward County Commission, as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
The concert is part of the Broward Center’s Arts Access Program which provides technical and marketing support to community groups enabling them to develop and build their audiences.
Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the program has collaborated with more than 40 performing arts companies, nonprofit organizations and cultural and community groups to present all genres of the performing arts including music, dance, theater, poetry and comedy.
