CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Randy Shannon played for Dave Wannstedt, then saw his coaching career get a huge boost years later thanks to Wannstedt.
So it's easy to see why the two hold each other in high regard.
But when Shannon takes No. 19 Miami (1-1) into Pittsburgh on Thursday night to face Wannstedt's Panthers (1-1), two good friends will see their eerily similar paths cross. Both are coaching in the city they've always called home. Both are coaching their alma maters. And both believe this non-conference game could be a way for the winning club to take a big leap forward this season.
Either way, one team will have a losing record when it's over. Pitt hasn't been below .500 after three games since 2005, while Miami hasn't been there since 2006.
