An innovative event combines charity and fitness in an effort to not only assist high school students interested in attending an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities); but it will also generate funding to help current HBCU students who might be facing financial        challenges.

The inaugural South Florida HBCU/Gr-eek 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, March 19 at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex in Miami Gardens. According to the organization’s website, “Proceeds from the race will help young people from low to moderate income families fulfill their dreams and have access to a higher education and increase the number of students who ultimately complete their college degree.”

Runners and walkers from all levels are invited to benefit the worthy cause while achieving their fitness goals. A high energy pep rally and warm-up prior to the kick-off will motivate participants in the officially timed race. In addition to water and first aid stations, musical entertainment will be provided along the course.

The event is hosted by Complete Athletes, Miami Gardens Councilman Rodney Harris, The City of Miami Gardens, 100 Black Men of South Florida, the Academic Hustle, Florida Memorial University and Community Builders and Human Capital Development.  The organizations are working together to strengthen “communities through affordable college access for students by providing academic readiness, supportive services and guidance to successfully achieve post- secondary degrees.”
