FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – A federal agency that fights workplace discrimination has suggested that the Fresno police chief and his staff get sensitivity training to settle the latest in a series of complaints within the department.
Capt. Al Maroney, who is black, accused Chief Jerry Dyer of assigning him to take over as district commander of a predominantly black neighborhood, even though Maroney saw the transfer as a demotion.
Maroney told the Fresno Bee that he doesn't believe Dyer is racist but that he's insensitive to discrimination by other officers.
Maroney complained to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2007.
Dyer denies the claims.
Last month, the EEOC also said the city should pay a financial settlement. If both parties don't agree on one, Maroney can sue in federal court.
