The Miami-Dade Department of Emergency Management is marking National Preparedness Month by encouraging residents to take steps to prepare for emergencies.   

This month marks the seventh annual observance of the NPM, a nationwide effort encouraging individuals, families, businesses and communities to work together and take action to prepare for hazards.


“Although South Florida residents are focusing on several storms in the Atlantic at this very moment, we are asking individuals to be prepared for all hazards regardless of whether it’s a hurricane, wildfire, flood, or other natural disaster,” said DEM Director Curt Sommerhoff. “If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to create an emergency kit, develop a plan and learn where to turn to be informed.”

Sommerhoff  said as predicted, the Atlantic basin was proving to be very active this season, with hurricane Earl barreling down the east coast, tropical storm Fiona forming and tropical depression number nine taking shape and may become the next named storm of the season.

“Residents should take this time to prepare,” he said. 

In the next several weeks Miami-Dade DEM, along with Palm Beach, Broward, and Monroe counties will launch an all hazards preparedness campaign for the region.

The goal is to promote a regional disaster preparedness message – get a kit, make a plan, and be informed. The campaign will include a new website and social media page, brochures and public service announcements targeted at the areas more than six million residents.
