BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) _ Blue-green algae has been spotted again on Lake Champlain.

Vermont Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/1dS8qUW ) that the Vermont Department of Health reported its first sighting of the summer on Friday.

The department’s interactive tracker shows small amounts of cyanobacteria were spotted south of Perkins Pier and the Community Sailing Center on the city’s waterfront.

Despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent over the decades trying to keep pollutants out of the lake, toxic algae blooms have grown, fed by rain runoff, snowmelt and municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Poor water quality in St. Albans Bay last summer prompted the town of Georgia to lower listed values for some lakeside properties this year.
