SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) _ The city of Savannah is setting new heat limits for horse-drawn carriages to try and protect the animals from blistering summer temperatures.

The city on Friday announced new limits for the carriage operations.

Carriage operators will have to take horses off the street when the heat index reaches 110 degrees or the temperature reaches 98 degrees. The previous limits were a heat index of 120 degrees and a temperature of 99 degrees.

Bridget Lidy, director of Savannah’s Tourism Management and Ambassadorship department, tells the Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/1fxZ4iV ) that the policy was reviewed after last year’s heat wave.
