maya_angelou.jpgAUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Maya Angelou says students should study hard, use their libraries, make a contribution to society _ and share the gift of laughter.

The poet, civil rights activist and author says she doesn't take kindly to people who're too “serious.'' Said Angelou: “I never trust people who don't laugh.''

The 82-year-old Angelou spoke Monday night at an event sponsored by the University of Maine at Augusta. The Kennebec Journal said nearly 5,000 people packed the Augusta Civic Center to hear her speak.

Angelou is perhaps best known for “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,'' the first volume of her autobiography. She last spoke in Maine fifteen years ago in Orono.
