HIALEAH (AP) — Boxes full of prosthetic legs for men, women and children injured during Haiti's devastating earthquake will be making their way from South Florida to the Caribbean nation.

University of Miami-affiliated Project Medishare plans to help 1,800 survivors walk again.
The first shipment of prosthetic legs was to be sent to Haiti on Monday, April 5.

An estimated 4,000 to 6,000 Haitians have lost limbs. Robert Gailey, the organization's rehabilitation coordinator, says that's about as many amputees as there were as a result of the Vietnam War.

Relief agencies, foundations and private companies are working to provide long-term care.

Doctors hope to fit survivors with prosthetic arms and hands in the future.
