CHILI, N.Y. (AP) _ Sydor Instruments has been awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a special camera for basic scientific research.

Sydor general manager Mark Katafiaz tells the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (http://on.rocne.ws/1Q5254N ) the camera will allow examination of things at the atomic level and will be used to study the characteristics of various substances.

The company, based in the Rochester suburb of Chili, says one of the cameras will be located at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island within two years and be open to researchers all over the world.

Sydor is collaborating with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on development of the camera.

Sydor provides science and industry customers with diagnostic solutions, imaging systems and ballistic imaging and test systems.
