EUGENE, Ore. (AP) _ Five senior living facilities in the Eugene area have reported outbreaks of norovirus in recent weeks.

Lane County health officials tell The Register-Guard newspaper (http://is.gd/8PkKH9 ) they are surprised by the timing.

In a typical year, the county receives three or four reports of norovirus outbreaks, usually in winter. This winter, the county received only one such report.

Norovirus generally causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fevers, sweats, chills and body aches. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it’s the most common stomach and intestine infection in the United States, affecting up to 21 million people and killing up to 800 per year.

No deaths have been reported in the Lane County outbreaks.
