KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Tennessee plans to retire the jersey of former star shortstop Condredge Holloway before its Saturday afternoon game with South Carolina.

Holloway, a former quarterback for Tennessee’s football team, also played baseball for the Volunteers from 1973-75. He was the first African-American starting quarterback in Southeastern Conference history and the first African-American baseball player in Tennessee history.

Holloway batted .351 during his Tennessee career, including a .396 average in his final season. His 27-game hitting streak remains a school record.

Holloway, who wore No. 1, will become the third Tennessee baseball player to have his jersey retired. The others are Todd Helton (No. 3) and Phil Garner (No. 18).

Holloway now works at Tennessee as an assistant athletic director for student-athlete relations and lettermen.
