The Cricket Open: There are other sports to watch this Thanksgiving instead of football. Check out the first U.S. Cricket Open at the Cricket Stadium at Central Broward Regional Park, 3700 N.W. 11th Pl. in Lauderhill. The open will take place on Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free on Friday, but tickets cost $1.50 on Saturday and Sunday. MDC Chamber of Commerce Annual Holiday Gala: The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce will host its 4th Annual Holiday Gala, “Progress: The New Currency,” at the Hyatt Regency, 400 S.E. Second Avenue in downtown Miami. A cocktail reception will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner and an award ceremony following at 7:30 p.m. Among the festivities, the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce will honor famed attorney and community activist Larry R. Handfield; the president of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Bill Talbert; and former Dade Community Foundation president Ruth Shack. Entertainment will be provided by the Leesa Richards band, a nine-piece, top-40 musical ensemble led by popular chanteuse Leesa Richards. Tickets are $150 each. Sweet Honey in the Rock: Sweet Honey in the Rock, the popular African-American, all-female vocal ensemble, comes to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. Celebrate their honey-dipped sounds ranging from blues, spirituals, gospel, rap and reggae to African chants, hip-hop, ancient lullabies and jazz. Sweet Honey’s collective voice, sometimes accompanied by hand-percussion instruments, produces soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms that will resound to the end of the year and well into the next. African-American Achievers: JM Family Enterprises is accepting nominations for its African-American Achievers awards. The 2010 celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale. JM Family will honor outstanding individuals who serve as role models and help shape the future. Nominations are being accepted in the following categories: Arts & Culture, Business & Entrepreneurism, Community Service and Education. The deadline for completed nomination forms is Friday, Dec. 11. Eligible nominees must work or live in Palm Beach, Broward or Miami-Dade. JM Family, Southeast Toyota and JM Lexus will donate $22,000 to local nonprofits as part of its commitment to celebrating the African-American Achievers and the community.
