LAUDERDALE LAKES — Federal agents on Wednesday arrested Broward County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion Jr., according to his attorney.
Eggelletion was taken into custody at 7:15 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 23, at his Lauderdale Lakes home, his attorney said.
"He was arrested by the FBI at his house this morning," said Johnny McCray Jr., the commissioner's attorney.
"At this point, I am not aware of the charges, or who else may have been arrested," McCray said, adding that there will be a press conference at noon today where the charges or any indictments will be unsealed.
Eggelletion has been under investigation for more than a year, reportedly for receiving undisclosed compensation from developers on whose projects he voted.
Sources familiar with Eggelletion's arrest say he is charged along with three co-defendants: Ronald Owens, Joel Williams and Sidney Cambridge, in financial misdeeds related to offshore bank accounts.
Eggelletion will be released on a $200,000 surety bond, and must surrender his passport, sources say.
Eggelletion is scheduled for a hearing at 2 p.m. today before Judge Lurana S. Snow at the federal courthouse at Broward Boulevard and Third Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
Also arrested in the federal corruption probe are former Miramar Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman and Broward School Board member Beverly Gallagher, according to published reports.
