LAUDERHILL — City officials here this weekend will host a Reggae Walk of Fame Induction ceremony, a fundraiser for a community radio station in Falmouth, Jamaica.
The fundraiser, to be held at the Inverrary Vacation Resort Hotel, will honor Ky-Mani Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley, with induction into Jamaica's version of Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
The line-up in Falmouth features reggae superstars such as Ky-Mani's brother, Ziggy, Third World, Barrington Levy, Culture, King Yellowman, Cynthia Schloss and Bongo Herman.
The Reggae Walk of Fame will be part of the future Bob Marley School of the Arts Institute, a free school for those studying arts, communication and public information.
The 200-acre swath of land, where the school will be built, is in the development stages in Falmouth, a city 20 minutes from Montego Bay on Jamaica’s North coast. The Walk of Fame will also be housed there.
Lauderhill and Falmouth formed a partnership in 2006 through the Sister Cities International program. Lauderhill Mayor Richard Kaplan will be the honorary guest speaker at the event.
“We support each other’s different causes,” Kaplan said of the partnership. “It’s a positive relationship, especially considering the number of [Lauderhill] residents we have of Jamaican descent. These are ties that need to be strengthened.’’
The radio station, to be called Free-I Radio-Falmouth, is to teach students multi-media skills in radio and television, said Ras Astor Black, the founder and chairman of the Bob Marley School for the Arts Institute.
“This is going to be something for students of all ages,” said Black, a TV producer and host of BobArtsTv, a local community access cable channel in Trelawny. “This will be a great community program.”
