One of Jamaica’s icons, The late Honorable Louise Simone “Miss Lou” Bennett Coverley, was revered in a show inspired by her works called Miss Lou in Color June 14, at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale.
Presented by Déjà Vu Theatre as part of Caribbean-American Heritage Month celebrations, satirical experiences, as Coverley would have performed, entertained the crowd. The cultural nationalist broke down the class and cultural barriers of pre- and post-colonial Jamaica through her defiance against the preferred Mother Tongue, English, instead using patios. The show featured among others, Miss Lou’s mentee – Dr. Susan Lycett Davis, right, who recreated some pieces from her book, Ode to Miss Lou … From the Soul of Dr Sue. The Coronation Market scene, features Déjà Vu cast and The Jamaican Folk Revue. Typically, when one does not accommodate the seller by purchasing an item, they are ‘trashed’ in the dialect.
