Illegal withdrawal

Islande Dort, 28, was arrested over her alleged involvement in a fraudulent withdrawal of over $80,000 from an unsuspecting victim’s bank account. Police say the scheme involved several people, including Jacqueline Dillion, 29, who was a teller at the TD Bank in Boynton Beach, where it allegedly took place. Dillion provided Dort, Lisa Ollis, 38, and Jessica Cruz-Torres, 29, with access to the to the woman’s account starting in 2011, police said, adding they would make withdrawals and divide the money among themselves. Cruz-Torres was previously arrested and is released on bail. Dillion and Ollis remain at large.

Exposure charge

William Cury, 52, of Boca Raton was released from custody after being arrested for indecent exposure where he is accused of exposing his “sexual organ.” The specifics are contained in the police report and are yet to be disclosed.

Such offenses appear to occur in Palm Beach County on a regular basis.


Marina controversy

After years of legal wrangling and concerns about gentrification of the surrounding neighborhoods, the $375 million redevelopment of the city-owned Riviera Beach marina is finally underway. Riviera Beach CRA Executive Director Tony Brown, other city officials and the developers held a groundbreaking ceremony several weeks ago but expect the controversy over the project to continue for decades to come.

BROWARD COUNTY

Kwik bust

Ayman Sulaiman, 36, manager of the Kwik Stop Market convenience store at 5635 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, was arrested during a raid at the store. Authorities say a six-month investigation found Sulaiman used the store to sell drugs. During the raid, weapons, drugs and cash were confiscated. Sulaiman is facing numerous felony counts.

More than a cabbie

In the 1990s, Gerlyn Cadet was a driver for transportation mogul Jesse Gaddis’s Yellow Cab company. He led the effort to break up Gaddis’s exclusive contract to service the airport and Port Everglades and went on to organize the Cab Drivers of Broward County organization to

advocate for better pay, benefits and improved working conditions for drivers. Following several protests and work stoppages, county commissioners changed the way cab permits are issued for the airport and seaport. In 2002, Cadet formed Ambassador Cab Company with a single cab and today his fleet has expanded to more than 20 serving the tri-county area.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

Director charged

Raphael Rivero, a 26-year-old city of Hialeah employee who is the director of the Hialeah Education Summer camp program, has been charged with soliciting a 13-year-old girl in his program to send him nude photos of herself. Police say he sent the child messages on SnapChat and offered her up to $200 to do so. She told her mother, who contacted police, who then posed as the child using SnapChat and set up a meeting with Rivero, authorities said. He thought he was communicating with the child.

WSVN changes

Sunbeam Television, parent company of WSVN Channel 7, has promoted Chris Wayland to executive vice president and general manager. He will succeed Robert W. Leider, who is stepping down on Sept. 1, but will continue as a consultant.

MONROE COUNTY

Astronaut training

Astronauts from NASA and the European Space Agency will train at an underwater laboratory in the Florida Keys. They will undergo nine days of NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations exercises in July and September at Aquarius Reef Base laboratory. This pressurized facility is located on the ocean floor off Key Largo. Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, is currently living in the lab on a 31-day experiment.

Teens arrested

Two teenagers from Stock Island were arrested on charges they stole 400 pounds of yellowtail snapper off a fishing boat that was docked at the Sea Lobster Marina. The fish were found at a nearby apartment complex where the 14- and 15-year-olds live. Just days earlier, a 12-year-old was arrested for allegedly stealing fish at the same marina.

Callous veto

Legal Services of Greater Miami Inc. provides services for low-income people in Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. State legislators have been passing bills providing funding to the agency but Gov. Rick Scott has vetoed those appropriations every year he has been in office.
