MIAMI — Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime, District 2, is inviting the community to “Savor the Experience” of Haitian culture, art, music and food by participating in the County’s 14th annual celebration of Haitian-American Heritage Month.
“Haitian Heritage Cultural Month is a wonderful opportunity for residents of every nationality and background to come and experience the richness of Haitian culture,” said Commissioner Monestime, the first Haitian-American elected to the County Commission. “I encourage everyone to take part in this celebration of all the contributions the Haitian community has made to Miami-Dade County and the world.”
As part of the celebrations, five Haitian art exhibits opened around the county: PortMiami, 1015 N. American Way; the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW First St; the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 212-260 NE 59th St; the Haitian Heritage Museum, 4141 NE Second Ave; and the Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 10975 SW 17 St. Miami. The art exhibits will run through the month of May. Toussaint Louverture is on focus at the Haitian Heritage Museum, featuring an art exhibit, a lecture and a celebration of the man’s contributions to Haiti, France and the Americas. Other highlights of this year’s celebrations include a soccer tournament, two History Bees, a “Taste of Haiti” featuring Haitian cuisine on Saturday, May 10 from 4 to 9 p.m. at MOCA Plaza, 770 NE 125th St., as well as a Haitian Compas Festival on Saturday, May 17 from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Sun Life Stadium, 347 Don Shula Drive. The celebration will round off with a gospel concert on Saturday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Oakgrove Park, 690 NE 159 St. in Miami.
