Actress and comedienne Kim Coles recently graced the campus of Florida Memorial University (FMU) during Women’s History Month. With the help of the Embrace Girls Foundation Inc., the university hosted an afternoon for 90 female students with the vivacious former cast member of In Living Color.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools Board member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, former City of Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson radio personality Tamara Gant were honores for their achievements and shared in a lively discussion of women’s issues such as managing life, stress and romance. Guests enjoyed meeting Coles at a reception following the program. FMU’s president Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis and members of her cabinet, were also present to welcome the celebrity.

The zealous ladies of the Beta Tau Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. presented their 68th Finer Womanhood Community Fellowship Awards Luncheon last month at the Kovens Center on the North Miami Campus of Florida International University. The afternoon was filled with a joyous celebration of courageous and committed women who serve both the Miami-Dade and Broward counties: Chantae Barnett, Patricia A. Hill, Alice V. Hodges, Johnnie Mae Kerr, Lona B. Matthews and The Honorable Hazelle Rogers. The members were also quite proud to introduce their 24th international president, Mary Breaux Wright, as the keynote speaker. Guests were entertained by Ronald Dennis, Euphemia Ferguson and Michael Emmanuel. Among those seen on the scene with the chapter president, Cora Coleman Portee, were: Dr. Ivis Richardson (emcee), Brenda Williams (event chairlady, Karen W. Blount (Sate Director Florida/Bahamas Islands), Alberta Godfrey, Dr. Bettie Campbell, Olga Van Beverhoudt, Dr. Venita Timpson, Lillie Harris, Lois Lee, Ray Smith and Roy Edmond.

Hundreds of ABC TV’s Scandal fans mixed and mingled at the 11th Book and Author Luncheon sponsored by the Greater Miami Chapter of The Links Inc. on March 29. Author Judy Smith, crisis management expert and the inspiration for the hit drama, engaged and energized the audience at the “Scandalicious Affair” fundraiser, which was held at Jungle Island in Miami. Smith, who is also the co-executive producer of the television show, shared nuggets of wisdom from her experiences and then left the podium to interact with all guests who had questions for the popular attorney and public relations guru. The program also featured a variety of entertainment by the Peter London Global Dance Co., Raehann Bryce-Davis and Carlton Ford of the Florida Grand Opera, Dr. Edward G. Robinson, and Leonardo Quintero. Following the luncheon, which was emceed by Channel10 co-anchor Neki Mohan, Smith was the guest of honor at a VIP meet-and-greet reception. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Links’ scholarship and community service programs. René D. Beal is the chapter’s president, and Jessica McCrary Campbell and Renée Jones served as the event chair and co-chair, respectively.
