NEW YORK — Miami’s own Cécile McLorin Salvant won multiple awards in the 2014 Jazz Awards presented by the Jazz Journalists Association. Vocalist Salvant, for her 2013 album WomanChild, was named Up and Coming Artist of the Year, as well as Female Singer of the Year.
WomanChild also was nominated for a Grammy as 2014 Best Jazz Vocal Album. Salvant, whose mother is French and father is Haitian, started singing with the Miami Choral Society when she was 8 years old.
Saxophonist Wayne Shorter was voted Musician of the Year. Pianist Herbie Hancock will receive the Lifetime Achievement in Jazz.

As a UNESCO goodwill ambassador, Hancock is organizing International Jazz Day celebrations April 30 in Osaka, Japan.
Joe Lovano received the Multi-Reeds Player of the Year and Saxophonist of the year. Gregory Porter was voted Male Singer of the Year. The awards will be presented at a party at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City on June 11.
