Destination Fridays:
Get your bead on as Broward County Libraries launch Destination Fridays with New Orleans-style festivities from 6:30 -9:30 p.m., at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Enjoy a jazz band, dancing, complimentary “Hurricane” cocktails and Cajun food, costumes, prizes, a fortune teller and travel discounts to New Orleans. It is an after-hours, over-21 event. Following Your Own Sense of Justice: A public reception honoring the life and legacy of Leonard Turkel will take place from 6-8 p.m., at the Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College, 600 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. The reception is a part of MDC’s Museum of Art and Design’s retrospective exhibition of Leonard Turkel’s rarely seen collages. More than just an exhibition of one man’s avocation, it is a legacy of a man who proved to be one of Miami’s greatest mavericks of civic equality and community building. Star Gazing:
Astronomy buffs are invited to the First Quarter Moon Star Gazing Party from 7-10 p.m., at the Fruit and Spice Park, 24801 SW 187 Ave., Homestead. This free event features the first quarter moon, where Bright Jupiter will be visible with its four closest satellite moons dancing around the King of the Planets. Outer planets, Uranus and Neptune, may be visible in the southwest in telescopes, and Mercury will shimmer low in the southwest. Ruddy Mars may be visible in the east just before closing time. Second Annual Short “Iron” Chef Cook-Off Competition and Health Fair
: Local Chapters of The Links Inc. join forces with Hispanic Coalition and Short Chef to provide health screenings for adults and engage children in practices for living a healthy lifestyle from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at Nathan B. Young Elementary School, 14120 NW 24 Ave., Opa-locka.

Domestic Violence Workshop: District 2 School Board member Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall will host her annual “No More Broken Hearts” workshop from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., to provide the community with information regarding the signs of domestic abuse and the services available to assist victims. The workshop will take place at Miami Edison Middle School, 6101 NW Second Ave., and include two separate sessions running concurrently, one for adults and another for youth. The youth component will be facilitated by the Jonathan Spikes Foundation, Urgent Inc. and the Millennials Project. Science of Chocolate:
Chocolaty confections will abound, much to the delight of science-lovers and chocoholics at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s Ninth annual event at the center, 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Feb. 8-9. Guests will experience instant chemistry with a variety of interactive chocolate experiments.  Activities will include armpit fudge, chocolate play dough, senses of chocolate station, chocolate Olympic torches, a liquid nitrogen ice cream demonstration and a never-ending chocolate fountain. The Science of Chocolate event is free with paid Science Center admission.  Guests can also explore the Science Center’s newest traveling exhibit, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. During Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, admission to the Science Center is $15 for adults, $11.50 for children ages 3 to 12, and $13.50 for seniors over the age of 62. Archbishop’s Poker Run 2014:
Archbishop Thomas Wenski is putting on his biker gear and taking his foot off the break for the second annual poker run, a motorcycle race with several stops, to benefit St. Luke’s Center starting at 10:30 a.m., at Mary Help of Christians Church, 5980 University Dr., Parkland. At each stop the participants pick up a card and continue on their way to the next stop. At the end of the race, whomeever has the highest poker hand wins. Registration is $25 per motorcycle and includes one Poker Card and one T-Shirt. The winning hand will receive a $500 Peterson’s Harley Davidson gift card.
