After touring with the I Have A Dream musical for 17 years, Herman LeVern Jones had his own dream: To produce the show.
He has, and will bring I Have A Dream, a Broadway musical by Josh Greenfeld, to Miami-Dade, debuting at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. Performances are on Jan. 9-11, 8 p.m. and Jan. 12, 3 p.m.
The Saturday, Jan. 11 performance at South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is a black-tie gala, marking the“50th Anniversary of the March on Washington,” hosted by NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins (Atlanta Hawks).
Last seen in North Carolina in 2002, I Have A Dream has been revived by Jones’ TheatreSouth Atlanta Inc.
I Have A Dream is a multi-media gospel musical, based on the words of international icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. featuring 120 historical images, 28 gospel songs and taut portrayals of quintessential moments during the Civil Rights Era in the Southeastern U.S., from 1955 to 1968.
This timeless production debuted in 1976 at the Ambassador Theatre in New York City, starring Billy Dee Williams. It travelled with Producer-Director Woodie King Jr.’s National Black Touring Circuit, of which Jones served as associate producer, actor and company manager.
By 2002 the production had visited 126 cities worldwide.
TheatreSouth launched a fund-raiser to provide 15,376 tickets valued at $307,520 to Miami-Dade County Public School students. At this writing, with 60 hours to go, only $380 had been contributed.
“Although we didn’t reach our goal, it is not going to stop us from giving away the tickets,” said Yonnick Jones, president of TheatreSouth.
Students and teachers will be bussed to the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center for special student-senior matinees during January.
Other locations will feature the musical.
The Phichol Williams Community Center, in the city of Homestead will host three performances of I Have A Dream on Jan. 24.
A show excerpt will be presented at the Florida International University Awards Banquet, Jan. 16, in the Graham Center Ballroom.
Tickets, which range from $26.50 – $100, are available online at smdcac.org or by calling 786-573-5300. RSVP for the gala at events@theatresouthatlanta.org
