Mitchell heads the list of honorees recognized at the group’s Leadership Awards. Other honorees are Earlston McPhee, the focal point for sustainable tourism development at the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Puerto Rico’s Terestella González Denton and Bill Clegg of Choice Hotels International.

“Dr. Mitchell’s tireless work to uplift the people of Grenada and the Caribbean region in good and in challenging times must be recognized and placed in its historical context. The region was privileged to still be able to lean on his wisdom and experience at the highest level of government,” Bevan Springer, president of the Caribbean Media Exchange (CMEx), said in a statement announcing the awards.

Mitchell, who has a doctorate in Mathematics and Statistics from American University,  was sworn in earlier this year as prime minister for the fourth time after leading his New National Party to a 15-0 victory, the second time he and his party achieved such a dominant win at the polls.

An avid cricketer, he is a former captain of the Grenada Cricket Team and the combined Windward and Leeward Youth Cricket Team.

“I will work diligently to ensure that the hope of the nation is not diminished, that all our citizens know that I am working on their behalf daily for the betterment of our society,” he said.

The Leadership Awards is a fundraiser for CMEx. Its sponsors include the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism.

“CMEx’s mission is to support and develop the ability of the media, government, the travel and tourism industry and communities to consider the importance of tourism in sustainable development, while lending a hand to the communities involved by sharing relevant expertise, financial and in-kind assistance,” the statement said.
