MIAMI – Miami-Dade County assistant public defender Keon Hardemon romped home to victory in Tuesday’s runoff voting for Miami’s District 5 City Commission seat.
Hardemon garnered 72.3 percent of the votes to 27.6 percent for veteran politician the Rev. Richard P. Dunn II. The victory makes Hardemon, at 30, the youngest member of the commission since voting districts were established several years ago. Michelle Spence-Jones, who had to give up the seat because of term limits, threw her support and election machine behind Hardemon, who, with Dunn, emerged as the two top vote-getters in the primary voting on Nov. 5. Hardemon, who hails from a politically active family, will take office on Nov. 27.
The Miami Herald reported Wednesday that he will continue to practice law while serving on the commission. This was the second bid at elective office for the Miami Northwestern High and Florida A&M University alumnus who got his law degree from the University of Miami. He lost a runoff to Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson in 2012.
